14th Street through the Locks to West Point Light & Return

Launch Point 14th Street Boat Ramp, just East of the Ballard Bridge (15th st), on the North side of Salmon Bay.
Max Difficulty:  SKI/II
Destination  West Point Light House
Duration  5 Hours
This is a fun paddle through the Ballard Locks.  The paddle through Salmon Bay is sheltered but keep an eye out for boat traffic.  Follow the directions from the Lock Keepers once you arrive there, there are also signal lights.  The small lock on the south side is the preferred lock.  Try and do this during off season or when boat traffic is light otherwise you'll get caught up in all the boat exhaust.  Once out of the locks paddle out to the Sound and head south toward the West Point Lighthouse.  There is a large sandy beach just north of the lighthouse.  Keep your eyes open for orcas that occasionally frequent the waters west of the light house.
